The behind-the-scenes activities that make InLight Richmond possible are getting ready to shift into high gear! 1708 Gallery is looking for individuals interested in getting involved in the planning of this unique and exciting outdoor exhibition and happening. From short-term to long-term tasks, there are a variety of volunteer opportunities.

The second annual InLight Richmond will take place during the weekend of September 25-27, 2009. Downtown Richmond will once again be transformed by international artists working with light.

This year, artists are being selected by guest juror Adelina Vlas, Assistant Curator of Contemporary and Modern Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. We have received submissions from throughout the Unites States, Canada, Germany, UK and Australia.

Our 5-year plan is to make InLight Richmond and internationally known celebration of light-inspired public art.

About InLight Richmond:

Organized by 1708 Gallery, InLight Richmond is the second annual exhibition of contemporary public art inspired by light. The inaugural edition of InLight Richmond took place on September 5, 2008 along a few blocks of West Broad Street in downtown Richmond. The exhibition and event included works by 44 artists from the United States, as well as Australia, Canada, and the UK.

Photography, video, sculpture, performance art, and music filled the streets of Richmond while more than 5,000 people attended the event. The installations and performances presented were made possible by contributions from corporations, foundations, and individuals.

InLight Richmond 2009 will take place on the weekend of September 25-27, 2009. Downtown Richmond will once again be transformed by the art projects presented in various public spaces -- sidewalks and walls, storefronts and buildings, etc.

InLight Richmond is organized by 1708 Gallery, a non-profit arts organization committed to presenting contemporary art that questions, challenges and redefines the established aesthetic boundaries. One of the oldest artist-run non-profit arts organizations in the country, 1708 Gallery offers the public an opportunity to investigate and discover the most recent and innovative developments in contemporary art.

The goals of InLight Richmond are:

• to inspire and engage the community with contemporary art in public spaces;
• bring contemporary art to a diverse public;
• promote public access to contemporary art;
• stimulate dialogue about art in public spaces;
• enhance the community of Richmond with public art;
• provide artists with opportunities to impact the urban environment.

Call for Artists Overview:

1708 Gallery invites emerging and professional artists, national and international, working in all media and disciplines to submit proposals. Preferences will be given to proposals that involve, investigate, interpret, or are inspired by light, either as a medium or as an abstract idea. Existing work, as well as proposals for new projects will be considered.

Several potential sites for installations have been identified and they include various public spaces (side walks, storefronts, buildings, walls, entry ways, atriums, street corners, etc.) along East Broad and East Grace Streets between 5^th and 8^th Streets in downtown Richmond. Artists may submit multiple proposals, and if accepted, may show multiple works. Projects that are site-specific, interactive, collaborative, green and/or grassroots oriented are strongly encouraged. The work will be selected by guest juror Adelina Vlas, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Adelina Vlas has an M.A. degree in Art History and a Curatorial Diploma in Visual Culture from York University in Canada, as well as an M.A. in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art in London. Previously, Adelina has worked at the National Gallery of Canada.

Conditions:

• Your proposal’s theme is light.

• You will offer all-night access to your work free of charge for the duration of InLight.

• You are willing to make the commitment required (personnel and otherwise) in order to bring the project to fruition. Artists are responsible for installation and removal of artwork before and after exhibition.

• You will either deliver or mail your work in time for InLight Richmond. If you ship your work, please provide detailed installation requirements along with unpacking/packing directions.

• Additional insurance coverage (we will provide basic insurance) may be required, to be determined in consultation with 1708 Gallery.

• Your project must be installed in a safe manner, and abide by all by-laws, laws, and safety standards, to be assessed and evaluated in consultation with 1708 Gallery (for example, electrical wiring must meet electrical safety standards).

• Artist grants permission to 1708 Gallery to reproduce entries for the purposes of publicity and education unless otherwise noted on the entry form. Please include photo credit where it differs from the artist's name.

Selection Criteria:

• Quality of the applicant’s work as demonstrated by the work samples submitted;
• How the project relates to the theme of light;
• How the project relates to the public spaces of Inlight;
• The feasibility of the project logistically and financially;

Selected Artists Receive:

• An artist honorarium of $150

• We anticipate providing financial support for the production of each installation.
The level of support will be determined in early summer 2009. All costs will have to be pre-approved by 1708 Gallery and may only be reimbursed with receipts.

• High-end video projectors will be available for any large-scale outdoor projections

• Recognition and inclusion in the Inlight print guide and website of the exhibition

• 1708 Gallery will provide access to the site, technical consultation, technical equipment when available
and installation support. Where possible, the City of Richmond and property owners will make arrangements for access of power during the event.

Awards:

$1500 Best in Show – to be selected by the juror
$1500 Best in Green - to be selected by the juror
$ 500 People’s Choice – to be selected by the audience/community

How to Submit:

All proposals are submitted ONLINE. Application fee is $30.

For Video Submissions:
Please submit all materials online and mail us your video on a DVD. Must be postmarked by March 31, 2009.
